Handler grew up with a family comprised of six children. Her mother worked at home while her father sold used cars. Her mother arrived in the United States in 1958, in the form of an immigrant from Germany. Breast cancer was discovered in the year 1989. She died a decade following her battle with cancer. Handler was brought up in Reform Judaism by her father and grandfather, who were Jewish. Handler had a pleasant, healthy childhood within a thriving neighborhood. In her early twenties, Handler relocated into Los Angeles in order to take on acting. Handler was an actor in order to support herself. Handler made the decision to pursue stand-up acting when she was 21, following the realization of her storytelling skills. Handler began her stand-up career becoming a member of the female-only Oxygen cast, which featured in a tv show called Girls Behaving Badly. The series was famous for its hidden camera and the practical joke. The show ran from 2002 until 2005. Handler then started appearing in several other shows like Weekends at the D.L., The Bernie Mac Show, The Practice and My Wife and Kids. Handler also began working as an associate on The Tonight Show. Handler gained notoriety in 2006 by hosting her own E! show. The show was titled Chelsea Handler. The show ran for a total of two seasons. Handler was a part of the Comedy Central's Hour Stand-Up Comedy Tour the following season across the United States. VH1, Comedy Central Premium Blend, HBO and Comedy Central have all broadcast her stand-up shows. In 2010 she hosted the MTV Video Music Awards 2010 were announced. Roseanne was the first female ever to host VMAs.
